Embry Riddle Students Use 3D Laser Scanning Services To Investigate Plane Accidents

Teaching Tool Gives Students An Edge

The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at Daytona Beach is using 3D laser scanning services to investigate plane accidents. The FARO Focus S70 is a state-of-the-art laser scanner helping students at the College of Aviation (COA) gain experience not offered at other schools.

Associate professor in the Department of Applied Aeronautics, Anthony Brickhouse states,

“Traditional accident investigation and documentation techniques involve time-consuming methods and various pieces of equipment such as tape measures, inclinometers, digital cameras, GPS devices, and other devices. While these methods can never be replaced entirely, it is imperative that future investigators are equipped with new knowledge and technology. The ability to familiarize Embry Riddle students with the digital FARO system will give them an edge over graduates from other universities.”

The scanner allows students to recreate accidents and analyze the images in a digital 3D setting. In addition, the 3D scanning services allow for a fully immersive learning environment that includes physical models.

3D laser scanning is an excellent teaching tool and allow graduate and undergraduate students the opportunity to advance their research and studies.

The university has been using the 3D scanning services since 2019, with two students receiving internships with the National Transportation Safety Board thanks to their knowledge and experience using 3D scanning services.

Students welcome the addition of 3D scanning services, confident it will help them move into the job market after graduation.
